Local Empowerment Center Packed for MLK Giveaway

The Empowerment Center of Cambridge, MD, was packed the morning of January 16, 2012, after opening its doors early for its fourth annual Martin Luther King giveaway. The food for the event, prepared by members of the New Revived United Methodist Church (NRUMC) of Smithfield, was ready before the announced starting time of 11 AM, so the decision was made to start early. Steven Fisher of WBOC-TV said that at one point every seat had been taken and people were still in line sometime before noon.

MLK Giveaway Set for January 16, 2012

Anyone in Dorchester County, Maryland, can receive free food and clothing from noon to 3:30 PM January 16 at the Empowerment Center on Pine Street in Cambridge. The fourth annual Martin Luther King giveaway is sponsored by the Pine Street Committee (PSC), Dorchester Elks Lodge 223, and the New Revived United Methodist Church (NRUMC) of Smithfield. PSC treasurer Octavene Saunders has been the coordinator of the event since its inception.
